Certificate IV in Building and Construction
- Site Supervisor
- Builder
Sydney, NSW · servicing all of Australia
Remedial and strata rectification work pays well above new-build rates.
A short qualification — often completed alongside tiling
Course overview
Waterproofing is a small qualification with disproportionate value, for one reason: water damage is the most expensive and most litigated residential building defect in Australia. Builders will pay properly for someone who can certify that the membrane was installed correctly, and insurers care intensely about who did it.
The qualification covers internal wet area waterproofing to AS 3740, external waterproofing of balconies, planters and below-ground structures, membrane selection and installation, substrate preparation and priming, and the compliance documentation that proves the work was done to standard. That documentation is not administrative padding — it is what protects you when a claim arrives years later.
It is a short, focused qualification and it combines exceptionally well with tiling. For a tiler already working on bathrooms, adding waterproofing converts you from a subcontractor a builder engages into one they schedule around.

Is this you?
Tilers adding a second trade, labourers already applying membranes on site, remedial and strata workers, and anyone wanting a short qualification with strong contractor demand.
Not sure you fit? Ring anyway. The most common thing Mahmoud hears is “I probably do not qualify” from someone who does. The session costs nothing and the answer is honest either way.
The CME Pathway Method
We map your work history and existing tickets against the qualification you need.
A straight answer on which pathway fits — RPL, gap training or full course.

Questions we get asked
Because water ingress is the most expensive defect in Australian residential construction and builders carry the liability. A certificated waterproofer who documents the work properly reduces their risk, and they pay for that. It is a short qualification with an unusually good return.
Waterproofing work above the NSW Fair Trading value threshold requires a licence, and the qualification supports that application. Given the defect exposure, this is not a trade to operate uncertificated.
For most people, yes. The two trades sit on the same job, and builders much prefer one contractor over coordinating two. If you already tile, adding waterproofing is the single highest-value upgrade available to you. We regularly run both RPL applications together.
That is where the money is. Remedial waterproofing on existing buildings — strata balconies, failed showers, planter boxes — is specialised, in constant demand across Sydney's apartment stock, and pays well above new-build rates. The qualification is the entry point.
Often yes, if you can evidence it. Photographs of membrane application at various stages, references from the contractor or builder you worked under, and job records all help. Because the qualification is small, gap training where needed is usually short.
Important. Certification Made Easy is not a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). We operate solely as a consulting agency, providing advisory and referral services to our clients through our trusted RTO partners.
Course codes, units and any licensing requirements are set by the training package and the relevant regulator, and change over time. Confirm current details with your RTO and, where a licence is involved, with the regulator in your state.
