Course overview

About this qualification

Plumbing is a licensed trade in New South Wales, which means the qualification is not optional and neither is doing it properly. The Certificate III covers the trade itself — water supply, sanitary plumbing, drainage, roofing and gas fundamentals — while the Certificate IV in Plumbing and Services is the level NSW Fair Trading looks for when you apply for a contractor licence in your own right.

The technical content is unforgiving because the consequences are: backflow into a potable supply, an incorrectly vented drainage stack or a badly executed gas connection are safety failures, not cosmetic ones. Assessors treat it accordingly, and so should any consultant advising you.

We work with two groups here — plumbers who have worked under someone else's licence for years and want their own, and overseas-trained plumbers who need Australian recognition. Both are legitimate RPL conversations. Both also require honest assessment of where Australian standards differ from what you have been doing, and that gap is usually real. We would rather tell you that at the start than have an assessment fail later.

Is this you?

Who this course suits

Plumbers working under another licence holder who want their own, overseas-trained plumbers seeking Australian recognition, and drainers or roof plumbers broadening into full trade licensing.

Not sure you fit? Ring anyway. The most common thing Mahmoud hears is “I probably do not qualify” from someone who does. The session costs nothing and the answer is honest either way.

Questions we get asked

Frequently asked questions

You can pursue the qualification through RPL where your experience genuinely supports it, but the licence itself is issued by NSW Fair Trading against their own requirements — qualification, experience and any assessment they specify. Plumbing is tightly regulated for good reason. Be sceptical of anyone promising a licence outright; what we promise is honest assessment and the right RTO.

Certificate III is the trade qualification — it makes you a plumber. Certificate IV in Plumbing and Services adds the compliance, design and business content and is what Fair Trading looks for when you apply to contract in your own name. Most people working toward their own licence need both.

With an honest skills assessment. Overseas plumbing practice often differs materially from AS/NZS 3500 and the NCC, particularly around backflow prevention, venting and approved materials. Your experience shortens the path considerably, but expect genuine gap training on Australian standards. We map exactly which units that means.

Gas fundamentals are included, but gas fitting carries its own separate licensing and endorsement requirements in NSW. If gas work is part of your plan, raise it at the assessment so we can build the full pathway rather than leaving you a unit short at the end.

It depends entirely on your evidence and on how much gap training your assessment identifies. A well-documented plumber with strong Australian experience is a very different timeline from an overseas tradesperson starting on standards training. We give you a realistic estimate at the assessment, not an optimistic one.

Important. Certification Made Easy is not a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). We operate solely as a consulting agency, providing advisory and referral services to our clients through our trusted RTO partners.

Course codes, units and any licensing requirements are set by the training package and the relevant regulator, and change over time. Confirm current details with your RTO and, where a licence is involved, with the regulator in your state.
