Pairs efficiently with the waterproofing qualification

Course overview

About this qualification

Tiling is deceptively technical. Anyone can set a tile; setting a whole bathroom so that the falls run true, the waterproofing is not compromised and the job is still sound in fifteen years is a trade, and NSW Fair Trading treats it as one.

The qualification covers substrate preparation, wall and floor tiling in a range of materials, cutting and setting out, waterproofing fundamentals for wet areas, adhesives and grouting systems, and the standards that govern all of it. Wet area work is the part where liability lives — a failed shower base is one of the most common and most expensive residential defect claims in the state.

Most tilers who come to us have been laying tile for years, often having learnt on family jobs or overseas. RPL is well suited to that, and tiling produces excellent photographic evidence. We usually recommend considering waterproofing alongside it, because the two together make you far more valuable to a builder than either alone.

Is this you?

Who this course suits

Tilers working without a certificate, overseas-trained tradespeople, labourers with genuine tiling experience, and existing waterproofers wanting to offer both trades.

Not sure you fit? Ring anyway. The most common thing Mahmoud hears is “I probably do not qualify” from someone who does. The session costs nothing and the answer is honest either way.

Questions we get asked

Frequently asked questions

Tiling work above the value threshold set by NSW Fair Trading requires a licence, and the trade certificate underpins the application. Wet area work in particular attracts scrutiny because of the defect risk, so being properly certificated matters more here than in some trades.

We recommend it to most tiling clients. The two trades sit directly next to each other on a bathroom job, builders strongly prefer engaging one contractor rather than coordinating two, and the combined offering lifts what you can charge. Doing both through RPL at the same time is also more efficient than returning later.

Photographs are king in this trade — set-out, substrate preparation, waterproofing stage and finished work across multiple jobs. Add references from builders or clients, invoices or ABN records, and any waterproofing or heights tickets you hold.

It can, but informal work is harder to evidence because there is no supervisor to verify it. The practical answer is to gather everything you have — photographs, any payment records, clients willing to write a reference — and let us assess honestly whether it will carry an application before you commit money to it.

It depends on your evidence quality and whether the assessor identifies gaps requiring training. Well-documented tilers move quickly; those starting from a blank page take longer because the first task is building an evidence file. We tell you which you are at the assessment.

Important. Certification Made Easy is not a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). We operate solely as a consulting agency, providing advisory and referral services to our clients through our trusted RTO partners.

Course codes, units and any licensing requirements are set by the training package and the relevant regulator, and change over time. Confirm current details with your RTO and, where a licence is involved, with the regulator in your state.
