Course overview
Hairdressing is a trade, and it is treated as one: the Certificate III is the qualification salons hire against, insurers ask about, and landlords want to see before they lease you a shop.
The qualification covers cutting across a full range of techniques, colour and chemical services including the chemistry that prevents them going wrong, styling and finishing, treatments for damaged hair, and the consultation skills that determine whether a client returns. Salon operations, retail and hygiene sit alongside the technical content, because a chair that is technically brilliant and commercially hopeless still fails.
Colour and chemical work is where the qualification earns its place. A misjudged bleach or a missed patch test is a genuine injury risk and a genuine liability, which is why this is not a trade to work in uncertificated. For stylists already working — including those trained overseas — RPL is a realistic route, and there is usually a practical assessment involved.

Is this you?
Stylists working without a certificate, overseas-trained hairdressers, salon assistants ready to move to the floor, and anyone planning to open their own salon.
Not sure you fit? Ring anyway. The most common thing Mahmoud hears is “I probably do not qualify” from someone who does. The session costs nothing and the answer is honest either way.
The CME Pathway Method
We map your work history and existing tickets against the qualification you need.
A straight answer on which pathway fits — RPL, gap training or full course.
We place you with the partner RTO best suited to your evidence and situation.
We stay with you through the paperwork until the certificate is in your hand.
Questions we get asked
Yes, if you have genuine salon experience. Expect a practical assessment — an assessor needs to see you cut and colour, which is entirely reasonable in a trade where the work speaks for itself. Bring a portfolio of your work, salon references, and any product or brand training certificates.
There is no individual hairdresser licence in NSW, but in practice reputable salons hire qualified stylists, insurers ask about qualifications, and chemical services carry real liability. Working uncertificated tends to cap you at assistant work and assistant pay.
Overseas hairdressing qualifications are rarely a direct equivalent, but they are strong evidence within an RPL application, especially alongside Australian salon experience. Chemical service standards and product ranges differ between countries, so some gap training is common.
Well beyond the qualification — fit-out, lease, stock, insurance and council approvals all apply. Many stylists start with chair rental inside an existing salon, which is far lower risk. If ownership is your goal, we will often suggest pairing this with the Certificate III in Business.
More than most people expect, and salons take it seriously because product retail is a significant share of salon profit. Retail and recommendation skills are part of the qualification for that reason.
Important. Certification Made Easy is not a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). We operate solely as a consulting agency, providing advisory and referral services to our clients through our trusted RTO partners.
Course codes, units and any licensing requirements are set by the training package and the relevant regulator, and change over time. Confirm current details with your RTO and, where a licence is involved, with the regulator in your state.
