Course overview

About this qualification

The Diploma of Community Services is the qualification that gets your name on a caseload. It is the standard requirement for case manager positions across NSW government-funded services, large NGOs and health-adjacent community programmes, and it is where the sector's pay actually starts to move.

The step up from Certificate IV is substantial. You move from supporting a client to holding professional responsibility for their case plan: assessment, goal setting, coordinating services across agencies, managing risk, and documenting decisions to a standard that survives audit and, occasionally, court. Counselling skills, group facilitation and community development sit alongside programme coordination and supervision.

For people who have been case-working under a Certificate IV — or under no qualification at all, which happens more often than the sector likes to admit — this is the credential that matches your actual responsibility. RPL is well suited to that profile, and we will tell you frankly whether your documentation is strong enough to support it.

Is this you?

Who this course suits

Certificate IV holders ready for their own caseload, workers already case-managing without the matching qualification, and experienced community workers moving into coordination and supervision.

Not sure you fit? Ring anyway. The most common thing Mahmoud hears is “I probably do not qualify” from someone who does. The session costs nothing and the answer is honest either way.

Questions we get asked

Frequently asked questions

Only with relevant experience behind you. RTOs assess entry individually, and placement supervisors expect Diploma students to be able to hold a conversation with a client in crisis. If you have no sector background, the Certificate IV first is the honest recommendation, even though it is not what people want to hear.

It qualifies you for many community mental health support and coordination roles, and mental health responsiveness is embedded throughout. Clinical mental health positions require separate qualification. If mental health is your target, tell us at the assessment and we will discuss whether a mental health specialisation is the better fit.

If you carry a caseload now, a significant proportion. Assessors want case plans and file notes with all identifying details removed, supervision records, your position description, performance reviews and any inter-agency work you have coordinated. We help you assemble and de-identify that pack correctly.

It can support entry to a social work or human services degree, and some universities grant credit. Social work itself requires an accredited degree and AASW eligibility — the Diploma is a strong step toward it, not a shortcut around it.

Case manager and coordinator roles commonly sit in the $85,000–$120,000 band, against roughly $75,000–$100,000 at Certificate IV level. Government-funded and larger NGO employers generally pay above small community organisations.

Important. Certification Made Easy is not a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). We operate solely as a consulting agency, providing advisory and referral services to our clients through our trusted RTO partners.

Course codes, units and any licensing requirements are set by the training package and the relevant regulator, and change over time. Confirm current details with your RTO and, where a licence is involved, with the regulator in your state.
