Course overview

About this qualification

Community sport in Australia runs on volunteers, but the roles that pay — development officers, academy and representative coaches, school programme staff, council sport coordinators — increasingly require a formal coaching qualification alongside sport-specific accreditation.

The qualification covers coaching methodology and session planning, athlete development across age and ability, designing training programmes that build capability without causing injury, sports safety and injury management, and the communication and leadership skills that determine whether a squad actually responds to you. Working with junior athletes and their parents is treated as a real skill, because it is.

If you have coached a junior side for years, played at a decent level, or run training for a club, much of this is already familiar — which makes it a reasonable RPL candidate provided your club can document what you did. It also pairs naturally with the Certificate III in Fitness for anyone wanting to work across both club sport and gym settings.

Questions we get asked

Frequently asked questions

Not for most volunteer roles, which run on goodwill and sport-specific accreditation. You need it when you want to be paid — development officer, academy, school programme and council roles increasingly list a formal coaching qualification as a requirement.

No, and that is a strength. It teaches coaching methodology that transfers across sports. Sport-specific accreditation from your national sporting organisation sits alongside it — most paid roles want both, and we will point you at the right body for your sport.

Yes, if your club can document it. Season records, team lists, a letter from the club on letterhead, session plans you have written and any accreditation you already hold all count. Clubs are generally happy to write these — just give them notice.

Yes, for any coaching involving people under 18, which is most of community sport. It is free for volunteers in NSW. Apply early — placement and paid roles both depend on it being cleared.

It is a good combination if you want to work across club sport and gym settings, since the two together open both. Coaching alone is often part-time or seasonal, so pairing it with fitness gives you a more reliable income base.
