Short qualification, but allow time for licensing and police checks

Course overview

About this qualification

Security work in New South Wales is licence-controlled, and the licence begins with this qualification. You cannot lawfully work as a guard, crowd controller or patrol officer without a NSW Security Licence issued by the NSW Police Force, and the Certificate II is the training component behind it.

The content is more substantial than the industry's reputation suggests. Conflict resolution and de-escalation, legal powers and their limits, risk assessment, crowd and venue management, patrol technique, incident reporting and emergency response all feature. The legal component matters most: security officers who misunderstand their authority create liability for themselves and their employer, and occasionally end up charged.

Demand is steady and the entry barrier is low, which makes it a practical option for people who need work quickly. It also opens shift patterns that suit study or a second job, and a genuine progression route into the Certificate IV and risk management, where the pay improves considerably.

Questions we get asked

Frequently asked questions

Yes, without exception. A NSW Security Licence is issued by the NSW Police Force and the qualification is the training component of the application. Police also conduct probity and criminal history checks. Working unlicensed is an offence.

It may — security licensing probity requirements are strict and certain offences are disqualifying. Be upfront with us at the first conversation. We would far rather tell you honestly that this pathway is unlikely than take your enrolment and let you discover it at the licence application.

This is one of the shorter qualifications, but the licence application and police checks add time on top, and that part is outside anyone's control. Plan for the checks rather than assuming you will be working the week after you finish.

They are different licence classes with different training requirements — crowd control for licensed venues and events, unarmed guarding for static and patrol work. Many people hold both. Tell us the work you want and we will make sure the qualification covers the right classes.

Certificate IV in Security Risk Management is the natural step, moving you from guarding into risk assessment, audits, supervision and corporate security — roughly $65,000–$95,000 becoming $90,000–$140,000. Many of our clients plan both from the outset.

Important. Certification Made Easy is not a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). We operate solely as a consulting agency, providing advisory and referral services to our clients through our trusted RTO partners.

Course codes, units and any licensing requirements are set by the training package and the relevant regulator, and change over time. Confirm current details with your RTO and, where a licence is involved, with the regulator in your state.
